The Division I Stroll…
- Biggest stories from the week that was:
- Mercer Island put a solid stake in the claim as top team in Washington this season. Mercer has yet to play a truly challenging league game, but the Islanders beat the 2nd ranked team from Oregon (Sunset) by a score of 10-3 followed by 12-11 overtime victory over the top team from Oregon, Lincoln.
- Bellevue ran away with their contest against Overlake. Many thought the Owls could present a challenge for the Wolverines, but Bellevue absolutely dominated in leading 16-2 before the final 16-6 margin. The Wolverines followed with a 5-4 victory over Lakeridge from Oregon.
- After the top three (Mercer, Bellevue, Issaquah) it appears the battle for the playoffs in the Northeast Conference will be a tight one for positions 4-6. Overlake, Northshore, Skyline and Lakeside all look like quality squads, but one of these will finish on the outside. Overlake and Lakeside look to have an advantage in terms of strength of schedule as neither has to face Bainbridge, Curtis or Puyallup. However, both will have to face King’s Way, whom appears to be one of the top four teams in the Southwest. Northshore and Skyline will not have to face King’s Way.
- King’s Way remains one of the Division I unbeatens and all three league victories have been over 2009 Division I opponents. We shall see how they do once they venture out on the road, but this group appears for real.
- Puyallup finally played a game! The last team to face-off this season took the field on Saturday night and punished Vashon 16-5.
- Lakeside, Eastlake, Stadium and Eastside Catholic all got off the snide in earning their first win of the season, though Eastside Catholic’s was a non-league win over Roosevelt.
- Northshore’s Taylor Wisman was named one of Laxpower’s Western Region Player’s of the Week.
- Standout Stat Lines:
- Taylor Dean, SR, Curtis – 9 point outburst on 7g, 2a in Curtis win over Seattle Prep.
- Sam Leggett, S0, Bellevue – Modest 1 goal, 1 assist in a win against Overlake… only modest until you realize he is a defenseman! For good measure he had 10 groundballs!
- Jordan Goodspeed, SR, King’s Way – Also 9 pts in a win over Seattle Prep on 3 goals and a 6 assists!
- Best match-ups of the upcoming week:
- 3/29 Lakeland/Panas @ Bellevue – How will the Wolverines stack up against the east coast boys prior to heading to the Lone Star state the following week?
- 3/31 Eastside Catholic @ Overlake – Rematch of last year’s DII final
- Mercer Island will be back in New York competing against Mahopac, Lakeland/Pnas and Guilderland
- Issaquah will be in Colorado taking on Castle View, Littleton and Columbine
The D2 Stroll…
- Biggest stories from the week that was:
- A week after Snohomish’s big win over Seattle Prep, Providence came out and shocked the DII world by knocking off the Panthers in double overtime! Ryan Morris scored five goals while dishing one assist and collecting 9 groundballs. But hold on… more shocking then the big win came the next day - Providence had used an ineligible player. Thus, the game has been ruled a forfeit and the win credited to Snohomish.
- Snohomish’s regained undefeated status didn’t last long as Lynnwood took down Snohomish on Friday. Trey Knowles led the Tigers with 7 goals in a high scoring 16-13 Lynnwood win.
- Lake Washington proved they are the class of the Evergreen Conference in beating Sammamish 9-6. Having already knocked off Redmond and Sammamish, and given the fact that Sammamish took down Olympic Conference #1, Klahowya, rather handily, it appears the Kangs have a great shot to go through regular season league play undefeated. Still a long ways to go and no doubt Sammamish will present a tougher challenge second time around, but 13-0 league record is there for the taking.
- Wenatchee rose to the top of the Eastern Conference posting 29 goals in two games, victories over Selah and Three Rivers.
- Standout Stat Lines:
- Nate Wirtz, SR, Snohomish – Back to back games with at least 20 groundballs… For the week: 5 goals, 3 assists and 42 groundballs in just 2 games!
- Forest Dayton, SR, San Jaun – Had a hand in all but one of San Juan’s seven goals, including the overtime game winner, to beat Stanwood 7-6.
- David Gibson, SR, South Kitsap – 5g, 1a and 9 groundballs in leading the Wolves to their first win of the season.
- Best match-ups of the upcoming week:
- Very light week… only 8 games on the schedule as many teams on Spring Break
- 4/2 Mukilteo @ Snohomish – Can the Panthers rebound from a tough week and knock off a second DI foe?

- “Who is
the top freshman in the WHSBLA?
I think Anthony Parker from Highline. This is a tough kid
who scored in Highline's big win over
Franklin. I also watched
the Nathan Hale vs Highline game. Highline was down early but Anthony
Parker scored a beautiful goal, juking out the
defender and it really pumped up the Highline sideline. You
should definitely watch for this kid.” – Jordan Gardner
- “Illegal Body Checks and Unnecessary Roughness penalties can be
assessed at one, two or three minutes, releasable or non-releasable –
dependent upon the severity and the official’s discretion. As
lacrosse is a collision sport, WALOA stresses in training and in numerous
bulletins to our members – your number one job as an official is to keep
the players safe. The same
discretion for penalty time goes for foul language – some words and
deliveries are worse than others. Most often, a little slip of the
tongue is let go by officials. A loud ‘bomb’ is usually a 1 minute
UC (all UCs are non-releasable) and if you direct a bomb loudly toward a
person (player, coach or official), well – perhaps a three minute UC is
warranted.” – Chris Long
